The divorce process can be extremely overwhelming and emotions can run high. However, it’s essential that you remain calm when going through a divorce for a number of reasons. Remaining calm and composed is critical to the outcome of your divorce. In this week’s #TipOfTheWeek video, Gathings Law Senior Partner, Honora Gathings, gives 4 helpful tips on staying calm through the divorce process:

1. Learn about your options

It’s critical that you talk to a professional who can assess your situation and direct you in a way that suits you and your family. You should be picky when it comes to your divorce lawyer. Not all divorce lawyers are going to be the best lawyer for you specifically; there will be some that you connect with and get along with better than others. Ask your potential divorce lawyer the right questions in order to determine which lawyer is the best choice for you.

2. Remain calm when asking your spouse for a divorce

Keep this conversation between you and your spouse and not the children. Asking your spouse for a divorce can be an emotional event and its best that you do it in a private conversation. Involving other people, especially your children, will only further escalate an already tense situation.

3. Know the state’s guidelines on child support, alimony, and marital assets

When you remain calm and are informed on all aspects of the divorce process relevant to you, you can make the best decisions for yourself that aren’t clouded with emotions. A mature approach allows you to divorce with dignity.

4. Be informed rather than bitter

If you’ve accumulated numerous assets during your marriage seek an attorney who has the experience to help you. Not all divorce attorneys will have the knowledge or experience needed to help you negotiate certain unique aspects that may arise in the divorce process; like for instance, if there is a business involved. You need to find an attorney that has the knowledge and experience to fight for your best interests.

At Gathings Law, we have the resources to fight and the experience to win. We understand that the divorce process can be difficult but we won’t back down and will be there for you throughout the entire process.
